Barista of the Month - Sophie, Paradox Cafe - February 2025

At Paradox Coffee Roasters, our café partners and team are part of our extended family, and we love celebrating them! Each month, we highlight a Barista of the Month from across the country, sharing insights into their routines, what they love about their work, and tips for home baristas. This month, we're shining a spotlight on Sophie from our flagship café, Paradox Coffee Roasters Café in Surfers Paradise—she knows how to make a damn good cup of coffee!

What’s your name and where do you work?

Sophie – Paradox Roasters Café, Surfers Paradise

What inspired you to become a barista?

I’ve always enjoyed working with people and having great conversations, so being a barista felt like the perfect fit. Plus, I get to make coffee all day – what’s not to love?

How do you start your day before a shift?

I usually hit snooze a few times, then hope for the best!

What’s your favourite part of working at the café?

The vibe of the café. It feels like everyone knows each other, and it’s great to be part of the Paradox team. And of course, being a taste tester when the chefs get creative with the menu!

Do you have any tips for perfecting latte art?

Practice is key! Getting the right milk texture is really important – if it’s too hot or thick, it’s harder to pour smoothly. And most importantly, have fun with it! Get creative and enjoy the process.

What’s your favourite blend or origin, and why?

Colombian coffee is my go-to. There’s so much variety – from clean, bright espressos to fruity, fermented V60s. And a quick shoutout to our decaf – it’s definitely worth trying!

What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?

I’m into local theatre! Whether I’m performing or helping behind the scenes, it’s a great creative outlet for me.
