At Paradox Coffee Roasters, our cafe partners are part of our extended family. We love celebrating them! Each month, we’ll highlight a Barista of the Month from our partners across the country, sharing insights into their routines, what they love about their work, and tips for home baristas. First up is Sameer from @coffeeprojectandco_.
What’s your name and where do you work?
My name is Sameer, and I work in the Coffee Project at Birrong.
What inspired you to become a barista?
I think my ambition to bring the rich, unique flavours of Nepali coffee and tea to the world, along with my passion to share a taste of my home country, is something that inspired me to become a barista.
How do you start your day before a shift?
I like to spend a few minutes reviewing my goals, whether it’s improving my latte art or connecting with customers, to set the right mindset for the day.
What’s your favourite part of working at the cafe?
My favourite part of working at the cafe is connecting with customers, and I really enjoy making coffee, especially when I add some creative latte art. It’s like making someone’s day with a coffee.
Can you share a memorable interaction you’ve had with a customer?
One memorable interaction was with a customer who looked really tired. I made her a mocha with funny latte art, and when she saw it, she burst into laughter and was very happy. That’s something I try to do every day with my customers. It’s amazing to see how a simple coffee and a smile can turn someone’s day around.
How do you perfect your latte art? Any tips?
My best tip for latte art would be starting with simple designs like hearts and rosettas, while focusing on your movement and pour speed. After that, it’s all about practice and learning from each attempt.
What’s your favourite paradox blend or origin, and why?
My favourite paradox blend is our in-house paradox blend, it’s smooth, fruity, and chocolatey.
What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
A fun fact most people don’t know about me is that I’m a coffee poet at heart, blending rhythm with steam. Swipe across for one of Sameer’s original poems!
